Beach near the Nuclear Plant Sellafield. The nuclear site was warned by EC it could face stiff penalties for not meeting stringent EC rules on nuclear waste. The dispute centres around access to an area of Sellafield nuclear plant know as pond B30. The pond contains fuel which corroded years ago while awaiting re-processing. Sellafield is among UK nuclear sites to be decommissioned in coming years. The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) will oversee the dismantling of nuclear facilities from April 2005. Three redundant pipelines running from the Sellafield site out into the Irish Sea will be removed as part of the clean-up of the nuclear legacy. The Sealine Recovery Project will remove two sealines that were installed in 1949 and a temporary sealine installed in the early 1990s.
